Default St.Nicholas

A few Santa carvers are doing old world Santas and such but most of us get in a rut carving the Coca Cola Santa. Well, stepping out of my usual grind, I carved my version of St. Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra. It is said, Nicholas was the forerunner of our modern day Santa legend. Actually this guy is not as mean looking as the photo would appear. It was the slight angle that seems to make him glare. We all know folks who go above and beyond for those around them. I carved this one especially for a lady in our church who is an angel without wings. St Nicholas is always show. Wearing a Bishops mitre.
Since I like to put something on the reverse side, I chose the Chi-Rho cross. The X and P in Greek indicate the first two letters of Christ's name in Greek. The letters for Alpha-and Omega round out the symbol. I hope you like him. Doing it made me feel good anyway.....

Really like the carving Ed! The colors are great! A change of pace is good for us all. Have a great Holiday for you and the wife.

On Dec 6th (St. Nicholas' Day) in the Netherlands, children receive the best toys. On Christmas, in the old days in Italy, gifts were brought by new-born Christ.

Nicely done. It has a strong tone but a comforting feel to it.

Excellent Santa, Ed
It's always rewarding to carve something for someone and know how much they like it.
Merry Christmas
