Do you have any idea as to what type of wood the spools are? How hard was the wood compared to Basswood?

Really good spoolies. The painting on the back would be special even without the Santa faces.

Very nice! I especially like the eyes on the middle one and your noses look great too.

My my, such kind words. Thank you very much.

The painting credit belongs to my wife. I just hack away at 'em, then toss 'em over to her for her finishing touches. She shops antique stores for unique buttons, to hide the knot on the ribbon. And we maintain the labels, which adds to the appeal. Sometimes I'll carve on the backs as well, but these three were handy, so that's what got photographed.

The wood, I think is maple(?). Of course these were manufactured as a means of delivering thread, and _not_ for carving, so the wood used was any wood that was handy. All I know is, it's not all that pleasureable to carve; not like butternut or white pine, etc. But folks seem to like them, so we keep at it...

Outstandinting job in the carving as well as the paint job. Kudos to both of you, Dynamic duo.

WOW! Those are some of the best I have ever seen. Like everything about them and especially your finishing technique.
