I saw Claude's tutorial on making a snowman pin and thought I would give it a try as an ornament. I enlarged the pattern to be 3 1/2 high and 2 7/8" wide from 1/2" thick basswood. I copied all his pictures and put them in a word document as an instruction manual. My wife really liked it, said "how cute, how about making a few more." So I looked at the pattern and realized the hat part was large enough to experiment. So these are what I came up with. There is Santa Gentleman (top hat) Gnome (pointed hat) General (army helmet) Scottish (tam o'shanter) Fiddy Cent Rapper (sideways cap) Gentleman (top hat, green band) Cowboy (cowboy hat) First Lady Jackie (pill box hat) Hercule Poirot (bowler) Screw eye is added for hanging, I need to screw them in more. Hope you like them. I had lots of fun trying the hats.

Nice work, Bob! I especially like that you "stepped outside the box" and changed the hats around! Claude |

NICE! A tree full of these guys would be really cool to see. Now you can do matching scarves and vests.. Snowmen are so addictive.Marcia. |

Thank you all for the nice comments. Claude - I did go out of the box, glad you like them. Marcia - I thought about scarves. I will have to change the pattern to add some more wood around the shoulders. Maybe another crew next year. Then they could fill the tree. Thank you for the idea.

Another idea is to carve a ball shape on each side of the head.. earmuffs. I drill a tiny hole on top of each ball and then bring a wire up and over the head to finish the earmuff look. I've seen tiny pompoms glued to each side and a pipecleaner as the top too. And then you can carve snowmen holding many things too. Large candycanes, hearts, pinetree... ![]() Have fun. You'll have a tree full in no time. Marcia. |

Marcia, You are so full of ideas. I will think about these and see what happens. I will work the sketch pad first to see what comes out and then adjust my pattern to add enough wood. Thank you for the ideas, they sure help. The santa hat and the cowboy hat went first at the office. Ten bucks each, not bad for a few hours of fun.

This thread is kind of old but are the nose carrots actually carved, or were they attached later? Nice Work! |

The nose was added afterwards. It is a 1/8 dowel that I carved to a point so it sorta looked like a carrot. I think having the wood as part of the snowman would not work as the grain would be in the wring direction and the nose would be easily broken off. Thank you for looking at my post.
