I need some ideas on how to ship my woodcarvings so they look 'professional'. I'd like small Christmas-themed or plain boxes but I haven't found a good source for these; generally the smaller boxes are too flimsy to protect the carving during shipping.

I'm still a fledgling carver and haven't sold much, but I don't want to wrap my work up in newspaper and send it off in a used shoebox.

If you use US Priority mail the shipping boxes are free. They have a variety of sizes and you can order them off their website which i believe is usps.com.
They even deliver them.

Kim - I ship every single item I carve and I ship it in any sturdy box I have on hand. I care little what it says or what it looks like.
I wrap each item in a roll of bubble wrap taped closed. (If a piece of the carving protrudes I brace that with folded/wadded bubble wrap before I wrap the entire piece.) I place it in the box that has a good layer of styrofoam 'peanuts'. Then I pack more peanuts tightly around the item and fill the box with them. Pack more in, stuff them down, pack more in. A sheet of cardboard across the top is a good idea, then a card with your address and the address of the person you're shipping the item to.
Seal the box with lots of clear packing tape making certain to cover the address label completely. DON'T wrap the box in any paper.

I buy a lot of duck decoys - some expensive. They all arrive in any old shabby, but sturdy cardboard box. The decoy is always in a plastic bag from a grocery store or Wal-Mart and it's packed in wadded newspapers. I don't care about the box - I care about what's inside.

I pack things so well you wouldn't believe it, but the post office and UPS still manage to destroy them! The post office said to continue packing as I was but put the whole thing inside another box! Lot easier than kicking butt in the post office I guess? ??? :
