| | Santa ornaments Here is the results of my excursion into little faces. My skills aren't up to this tiny stuff. This is a pattern from issue #4: 5 minute Santas by Art Shoemaker. Maybe you experts can carve him in 5 minutes, but I can't even get the hat round in that length of time LOL. I thought it was interesting how different they all are.
I think I used everyone's painting techniques on them.....one is finished with BLO, one is polyurethane, two are matte acrylic varnish, one is antiqued with dark wax, one with acrylic burnt sienna, two with oil burnt sienna....get the picture. I tested every different way I had read about. LOL I really like Lynn's method of wetting the wood before painting. I think when I get more experience with it I can do some very subtle shading while adding layers of thin washes. Practice, Practice, Practice |

| | Re: Santa ornaments Nice work Joy! Don't think I'd risk crossing that Santa on the right of the screen. He looks like he's not having any fun! I guess with all these Santa carvings dominating the forum I'm going to have to break down and carve one myself!! |

| | Re: Santa ornaments I like all four of your Santa's after seeing yours I will have to get out issue 4 and try one myself. I am one of the slow carvers also. I need to practice on my painting as much as my carving.
Isn't it great you not only learn more on carving and painting but vocabulary as well. It would be interesting to just listen to Hi-Ho and friends. |
