R-Olds posted some of his ornaments from the tutorial at Carving Instruction and I decided to give it a shot. I've admired the work I've seen other members post here and but had never tried a Santa of any type or any painting on my carvings. But the tutorial made it look soooo easy. The tutorial didn't mention how much fun it would be! I really enjoyed carving and painting it and am fairly pleased with the results. I plan to do another ornament for additional practice and then see if a full in-the-round figure is equally fun, so if anyone has any recommendations or patterns for that, I would really appreciate the information. Thanks again to Randall for posting his work and the link!

That is a good first santa. I love the eyes--especially the bags under them. Often, the eyes are what draws attention to any carving so if you can get them "right" , the rest of it flows together. My first santas were Ron Ransom's and T. Wolf's patterns and they have several books. The were easy starters from a block of wood and could be cut with a band saw or coping saw. Sabol has lots of action and flow to his santa patterns if you want to look for his book. Donna T
