Default Santa ornament (My first Santa carving!)

R-Olds posted some of his ornaments from the tutorial at Carving Instruction and I decided to give it a shot. I've admired the work I've seen other members post here and but had never tried a Santa of any type or any painting on my carvings. But the tutorial made it look soooo easy. The tutorial didn't mention how much fun it would be! I really enjoyed carving and painting it and am fairly pleased with the results. I plan to do another ornament for additional practice and then see if a full in-the-round figure is equally fun, so if anyone has any recommendations or patterns for that, I would really appreciate the information. Thanks again to Randall for posting his work and the link!

That is a good first santa. I love the eyes--especially the bags under them. Often, the eyes are what draws attention to any carving so if you can get them "right" , the rest of it flows together.

My first santas were Ron Ransom's and T. Wolf's patterns and they have several books. The were easy starters from a block of wood and could be cut with a band saw or coping saw. Sabol has lots of action and flow to his santa patterns if you want to look for his book.

Wow...the expressiveness of the eyes on your Santa is wonderful. You set the bar high. Thanks for the link to the Santa tutorial.
