| | Re: Santa checking his list Hey Mel, nice work.....I have an awful time getting good pictures. I have not learned to use the digital camera - and am too stubborn to read through the manual (another time). Thanks for the outside advice for picture taking Bob. |

Unfortunately, some of us don't get a lot of sunshine so we have to take our photos inside. Didn't WCI have an article on photographing work. It was a very good article.

| | Re: Santa checking his list Great Santa! My favorite part is the way his foot is coming out from under his robes. He kind of looks dazed at the length of that list too. Colors are so complimentary also. Just a really good Santa.
I am just getting into trying to carve a good Santa or two for Christmas presents. So far, I'm still working on it.
What size was the blank you started with and is it basswood or what? My inquiring mind wants to pick good carvers' brain.

| | | Re: Santa checking his list Mel, Thanks for the outside pic, it really shows it off better. Like me in Buffalo NY, we can't be outside all the time. When taking inside photos, set your light source off to the side instead of straight on, I'm learning this process too, but have found that with this approach it works out much better. WCI did do an article on this just recently and it helped me out.
Another important aspect, is use a tripod for the camera and if your camera has a timer, use it for sure. These last two elements are really important with digital cameras.
Great carving job and we're all learning together about "taking better pics", but hey, we're carvers first anyway. |

| | Re: Santa checking his list Thanks folks, your right coffeman picture taking is a whole new experience, I'm a little more blessed than you are since I live in New Mexico, where the weather is generally mild and the sunshines most of the time, I will try your tip on moving the light source to the side. I read the article in WCI and will probably make something to take photos inside. Maybe Bob can talk them in to doing another article on this to help us amatuers. Speaking of coffee, have you tried Pinon Coffee. Real Smooth I like it.
