Clay, I'd start by checking out some photos of carved Santa's and make some sketches of them. Start out by drawing some simple line drawings of the Santa at the same size you want to carve one. There's some good tutorials on this forum too. Tom H |

At fox chapel books you can find a number of Santa books. I like Harold L. Enlow books. You may want to look at 3Crosseswoodcarving - Home, Gary has a DVD for Santa carving. That I liked also.

I started with the Ron Ransom books. The next step up would be the Cyndi Joslyn Carving Santas Around the World. But start with Ron Ransom. |

Clay, the best thing is to find a club or other carvers near you. On the left side above you will find a "Carving Clubs" button that you can use to search. If you can't find one, put the word out here for someone near you. Books are great, and a big help, but they can't beat sitting down with another carver. Just my opinion, others may differ.

Clay, this time of year is when various carving groups begin to teach or hold workshops on carving Santas. That is how I got started. Warning......after one, you will be hooked. We have a casual group of Santa carvers on the forum, known as the "Santaholics".....LOL there is no known cure. |

I started with the Cyndi Joslyn Carving Santas Around the World book. The faces aren't to detailed and as you gain experience and courage you can make the beards and mustaches more detailed and also improve on the facial features to make them your own. Go to the video section here, Gene has a couple of Santas out there on video for you!

The Hand Carved Holiday Gifts, Vol 2 edition that Woodcarving Illustrated has is an excellent source for Santa carvings. I think you can get it free if you subscribe for 2 years. Check it out!! I would highly recommend it! Blake |
