Default My 1st (maybe only) snowman

Not really into Xmas ornament carving - much to my wife's despair, but finally allowed myself to be bullied (by her) into at least trying one.

Had a scrap of alder about 2" wide and maybe 4.5" tall. Gave it a quick spin on the lathe, then used a bent-tip knife to snip small slices off all 'round to give it the hand-tooled look, slapped a quick paint job on. Now I'm trying to find something for a mini-sprig of mistletoe to glue on the side of the hat.

Comments, criticism and good-humoured snickers welcome.

I agree I never heard anything about a knife being involved in this so called carving just power tools. You asked for it!

Whitecree,

I like it. The hat is well done, the cuts are clean, the nose looks like a carrot ..

I think you could do a bit more , but for a carving that you didn't really want to do not bad. But I have to say I agree with the others , it shows you rushed , and did not have your heart in doing it.

I agree with Ash he does look good, but what is he plugged in to? I saw the cord sticking out his backside.

Whitecree: It looks good! Now try a nice easy one like this - use a handy chunk of 1.5 x 1.5 by 5 inch basswood and a knife. The arms are twigs from the tree out in front.

Well Whitcree as you have probably learned ask for comments and critisism on this board you will get it. That is why I always ask for them but I listen to what they tell me and maybe I cant change the carving I have shown you can bet I will take that advice to the next project. I have to agree also we have seen a lot of what you have done and this is a little folk art for me. Would probably sell well at a craft show but had you carved the eyes and the teeth mouth and set the teeth back a bit, it would have been an awsome carving. Not finding fault JMHO.
