Dave, I have what you suggested for painting but Have not used it to hold while carving. Mine was made from a 2 x 4 x 4 base with a 3/8 hole and dowell and a screw epoxed on the dowell. Works wonders for painting.
I have several with different lengths of screw sticking out for the different sizes of carvings...I have a couple with about 1/4 to 5/16 for the very small carvings and some with 1 1/2" for larger things...I use them for all kinds of things, carving, painting, holding to add something etc.. useful tool. actually I said dowel, thats just for ease of posting ..I grabbed some wood from the waste wood box and used that, has a curve for the hand already in it and seems to relieve hand fatique?
