I was PM'ed by one of our members to try my hand at a Leprechaun. It didn't take long for me to think it over as I always wanted to carve some sort of irish style face as its a strong part of my heritage. So here you go, my version of a Leprechaun. I only had one stick left in my garage and it has rot down the core which is evident under his chin blow the pipe. The wink was a first time attemp...not an easy task, and the face didn't contort the way I wanted to give that expression. The wash I used for the hair/side burns didn't show up unfortunately as it supposed to be a reddish/orange color. The shamrock was an after thought as I would have put it somewhere else had I thought of it earlier. Lots of green in this picture...even his eye is green. The wood is birch and stands around 5 feet tall. Thanks for taking a look. Patrick |

Wonderful. I like the wild look on his face. Only since you mentioned it, the hair would have looked terrific red. I wonder if you could go back and wash over it again? Nice touch with the wink and the shamrock. Christina |

Top of the day to ye all, and thank you for viewing this ornery looking character. Christina, I have never gone back and tried putting the wash over the sealer and the wax. If someone has done this, let me know and I may go back and try adding more layers of the wash to bring out the sideburns some more. |

Turpentine or mineral spirits would break up the surface finish. I've done it before, but not on a carving as fine as this one. I think I'd test try the process on something unimportant first. He sure is a fine leprechaun. |
