| | Goody's blank with a twist Hi Gang,
First let me say that my carving is in no way meant to offend anyone especially my native friends. As you probably know I have very deep feeling for the aboriginal people their culture, their beliefs and their art. I also collect native art it is my passion. With that said when I started to carve Goody's blank I saw something in the blank and decided to go for it. I did not see a Santa what I saw was something I have been wanting to do for a long time a Native Katchina Doll. I am not used to doing carvings this small as you all know so it was a bit of a challenge. The depictions on the Kathina are partly my imagination and some knowledge I have of native art. It is my own interpretation and not meant to represent anyone or anything. I like to be different and I realize that this is really different. Alfie if your reading this thread this is my very first attempt at native art I hope I havent offended anyone. I also hope Goody you are not offended that I took your blank in another direction, it just sometimes my imagination runs wild as it did on this carving. The critter on the Katchina's head is supposed to be a wolferine. I have included some pictures and welcome your comments as you know. I am just dont want to offend anyone.

| | Re: Goody's blank with a twist Great job Colin! Even an inexperienced carver like myself realizes that sometimes the wood tells you what to carve. You did a great job of releasing what was within Goody's blank!

| | Re: Goody's blank with a twist Colin-great job on the Hopi Santa God.you can not in future say i don't do caricatures.it is truly a magnificent piece of work.you have really stepped outside the box
i don't think Goody will be offended,i would guess that part of this excercise was to see how many different carving could come out of one rough-out.

| | Re: Goody's blank with a twist Colin,
Offended "NOT" Impressed "VERY"!!!
How cool to see something in the piece of wood that no one else seen. Glad you went for it. This project was intended to see what was going to come out of the same piece of wood. It was just sent out to other minds and thoughts and geographies. I had about 150 scraps off the paulownia and just came up with a quick freehand pattern for the duplicator and thought it we be fun to share some of these with the group. The Katchina will bring joy to its beholder just as a santa carving will.
Good Job
Goody

| | Re: Goody's blank with a twist Colin, WOW! That is absolutely georgeous! What a versatile talent you are to be able to go from the large wood spirits in the trees to something like this. |
