Default The giant santa is finished

Hi Gang,
I have finally finished the giant santa and posted a picture of him on picture trail follow this link http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/...&members=1
I will have to tell you that it was so much fun to do I had a ball doing it I know it is not the best santa in the world and I learnt a whole lot doing this carving I am sure that me next one will be a lot better. The santa is carved out of a white pine log about 6ft tall and 2ft in diameter. I decided that he would decorate the front of my house this year so I finally decided to finish him with exterior latex I did it in a wash and will be doing maybe one more coat. Then I will seal it with a gloss poleurathane finish to preserve him.
I think I am hooked on carving santa's but cant seem to think that I should have started with something smaller. Let me know what you think for my first attempt I would welcome any comments from all you santa carvers I have a lot to learn and I really care what you think. So does this make me a santa carver or do I have to carve more? This is the first carving I have painted I think I need to thin down my washes a little more.
Colin

Wow Colin, now that's a Santa!! What a great decoration! Better watch out, the Missus will be having you do Mrs. Claus and elves too!
Mitch, I don't know about Mrs. Claus with attitude...great carving though! Both pieces are very nicely done!
Ibrewalot, that's a very impressive piece. Nice Santas guys! And yes Colin, Santa carving can become quite the addiction! Callynne

Colin, that Santa is great! Wow, what an ornament for the front lawn. I love it.

Um, that ornament you're sending me in the exchange, it's smaller than that, right? Let me know if I need to start clearing out my living room : I suppose I could forget the tree and just put the gifts under Santa LOL

Coffeeman,
You know I was wondering what I would carve for Campbell River Competition this year thats a great idea by that time I should be able to carve a few more and have him down pat. Thanks for the idea maybe a snowman to go along with him.

Hi gang.
Now that I have finished the giant santa I have a bit of a problem. The problem is that the Mrs doesnt like the colour. She thinks he is too orange in fact she hates the colour. What do you think? I told her that there is no way of changing it now as the weather is far too cold to paint him again. She has even concented to letting me move him into the foyer of the house and paint him there. Do you think he is too orange she thinks that he should be either candy apple red or burgundy. I would invite your comments and please dont base them on the point that this came from my wife. If you think he is ok then I will leave him as is but if you vote to change then I guess the majority wins.
