| | First Attempt At Santa Revisited Finally, I have finished my 3 Santa ornaments! Just in time for Christmas! I tried the "wash" technique on the painting, but I think I may not have watered it down enough. I'm going to go ahead and start on next year's ornaments so maybe I can participate in the ornament swap! I think that is a great idea! As always, your suggestions are appreciated!!
Merry Christmas to you all!!!!

the ornaments look great you did a nice job with the painting. just a couple of questions: did you use acrylic paint? and if so did you dip them in antiquing{boiled linseed and burnt seinna mixed together} after the paint was dry?
just asking

| | Re: First Attempt At Santa Revisited Hey Bart! I just finished painting them last night so I hope to go to Lowes tomorrow and purchase some Boiled Linseed Oil so I can dip them for the antiquing. I couldn't find the Boiled Linseed Oil and Mark said you could find it at Lowes. I will post another pic as soon as they are completed. I also need to figure out what to use as a hanger. Any suggestions??
Thanks for the comments!

a cut off fish hook glued in a very small hole works woodcraft {the one in bettendorf iowa} has some teeny-weeny screw eyes that work out great.
the linseed will tone the paint down if you used acrylic it may look kinda chalky right know the oil will tone that down.
hope this helps

| | Re: First Attempt At Santa Revisited Well, since I won't be making it to Iowa any time soon, I will probably go with the fish hooks since I have plenty of them in my tacklebox!
I did paint with Acrylics so I will definitely go out and get the linseed oil so the chalky look will be toned down. I made these for my mom, my mother in law, and my 8 month old. Hopefully I will start a tradition!
Thanks again for your suggestions!

| | Re: First Attempt At Santa Revisited Why youare at lowes, they have the brass or nickel plated eye screws. I usually use 24 ga wire and wrap it around a 10 penny nail that I have nailed through a base and twist the wires about a 1/2 inch or 3/4. Then use the drill press with a 1/16 dril bit and drill a hole in the top of the ornament then glue the wire in to the ornament, But the eye screws make it easier and they hold great.
BTW, great looking Santas. Many different methods on antiquing and if you use BLO, dispose of the wags properly as the will create combustion. I use a BLO sometimes but use a acryilic wood stain of a drak color and paint it on and then wipr it off. Then Deft satin spray. Just an suggestion. Merry Christmas. |

| | Re: First Attempt At Santa Revisited I don't remember seeing this earlier but before you antique it spray it with Deft, let it dry a couple of hours then antique them. Great work carving those . Also I have used a mixture of liquid wax to antique them. If you want a water based on they make one that I like to use, Golden Oak by Ceramcoat Michaels, Hobby Lobby or Walmart should have it.
