Default A couple of ornaments

It has been a busy (and hot) summer so not much carving getting done here. I did finally complete a few items I thought I would post. These are the 6th, 7th, and 8th carvings I've done. I can definately tell I'm getting better with each one.

#6 is based on the Quick & Easy Santa Ornaments by Cyndi Joslyn in the Santa showcase book. My wife says he looks sad and that Santa shouldn't look sad. I said he was just in a pensive mood, reflecting on all the naughty boys and girls.

#7 is a design of my own. I just cut out a 3"x5"x3/8" basswood blank and drew out the face. I'm pretty happy with it but think maybe the beard color is too dark. Although I like the fact that it isn't pure white.

#8 is based on one of the cats by Shawn Cipa in the new WCI.

Now to find some not too difficult patterns for a bird and a dog. Any suggestions?

One other question...has anybody tried creating silicone molds of anything they have done to cast resin copies?

Thanks,

Brian

Brian, nice work. Yes, I have made a number of silicone molds for my carvings. I then cast with resin. It's very easy to do and the reproductions are excellent in terms of detail. PM me and I can give you some tips if you like. Here's an example.

Very nice carving I like your design the best. Your wife and mine both think Cyndi's Santa looks sad.

Excellent work Brian! Don't worry about the sad face...even Santa can't be jolly all the time! The beard on the second one is a little dark for a Santa but I love the detail and the way you painted it!

Hey, maybe the first Santa has a case of post-Christmas depression : ) Anyway, I like all of them. I do agree that the beard on your design is a little dark - try a little lighter gray or very light tan and a little heavier dry brush of the white.

As for simple animal patterns, try a Google image search on bird or dog and det the search criteria on the left to clip art or line drawing.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Thanks for the Google tip Bill, I haven't noticed that option before.

I went looking around for a eye to screw in to the top of their heads but haven't found anything. I tried Lowes and Hobby Lobby. Did I just miss them there or does somebody know where I can find those?

Your Santas ornaments are super.
I was looking at this site earlier for screw eyes - other sizes are available

Screw Eyes 217 1/2 Brass Plated 7/16
