| | Christmas in July I was carving on a roughout last night and got to thinking about eventhough its a roughout they all seem to turn out different. I got carried away on the skirt of this one! I was so involved I thought well it must be about 9:00 and when I walked in the house it was 11:45.
Lets have some fun with this!
I will send a paulonia roughout to the first 25 carvers who request one! FREE
OK whats the Catch???
I would like to see all the final carvings posted into this thread by Christmas!
If you wouldn't mind tell us what you think of carving from a roughout.
Did you like carving paulonia?
What method did you use to carve him? Power, Knives, Chisels, Let The Dog Chew on Him for a while?
What Finish? I sometimes only paint the face and beard and let the natural beauty of the paulonia show.
These roughouts will be very rough cut to allow room for change.
Have fun, Enjoy, and Share the Santa with the forum.
Goody
PS heres a few pics of ours!

| | Re: Christmas in July What is Paulonia? Does it carve like basswood? Where do you buy it? Does the price compare to Basswood? Full of question, I am!!!!
And I would be willing to carve something by Christmas from a roughout if I am one of the 25.
Thanks,
Bette http://home.centurytel.net/BetteFranke

Never Too many s!
Paulonia is light tan colored wood with dark brown grain lines. It does not carve like basswood. It is an open grain wood reminds me somewhat of carving mahogany exept not as hard. I like it for the Santas because the open grain wicks in the antiquing we use and even though a piece is painted you can still see the grain lines. It can run from hard to soft in the same piece of wood. It doesn't detail as well as bass wood but i do all my beard lines with a small V gouge and it doesn't splinter out on me. A lot of Paulonia is shipped to the orient as it is a extinct spieces there. Some kind of cerimonial box or carving was made from it. I barter for mine I trade a lumber yard a dozen santas each year for a couple thousand board feet of it. I just brought 15 5 x 8 12foot timbers home last month and I have another 5000 bdft air drying up there now. Should be dry by next summer.
Ps You are the first request! pm or email me an addy and I will ship the first ones out next week.
Goody

| | Re: Christmas in July If you have not reached 25, put me on the list. I have a friend who started raising paulownia a couple of years ago (an interesting process as they are cut back to ground level the first few years. Now, he finds that they are subject to "sun scald" ruining them for lumber. He will use the first trees as shade for his next planting. He gave me about a 8" log and I have put it back for future carving. The problem is that this wood is VERY green.....I mean an extremely high water content. Don't think the 1" per foot rule will be sufficient. |

| | Re: Christmas in July Ash,
Just let me know when you are heading this way.
Bygeorge,
You are #3 roughouts will be in the mail next week.
Paul,
The wood wil dry rather quickly. The 5x8s that I had cut last year are pretty much dry now. You will know when its dry! I can pick up a 14 foot 5x8 timber put it on my shoulder and carry it into the saw by myself. This wood is amazingly light when it is dry.
You are #4

| | Re: Christmas in July Goody, If you're not up to 25, count me in! It sounds like great fun...my delay in jumping in is wondering how I'd get time! I'm so consumed with my oak chairs right now and that condition known as making a living makes it hard to get to the "really important things in life"!
I'd like the challenge!
