Default Cedar Egg Santas

Here's a few santas, carved from cedar eggs. Surprisingly I found cedar pretty eash to carve, both with handtools and power.

Looks good. I have Mary Finns book carving egg heads. Not wanting to wait for basswood eggs to be mailed I carved my own. I have never seen cedar eggs so I assume thats what you do. I think carving the egg is as challenging as carving the head. Only my opinion.

Yes, they are hen sized eggs. I didn't carve the egg shape myself. The gift shop where I work was selling them as a suitcase scent eliminator. I bought about 60 of them(yes, I AM crazy)

Terry, great job and what cute little santas. I still have to find the time to carve an wooden egg. I'll add it to the long list of things I want to carve. LOL
Kathy
PS: Dumb question, once the santa is painted does it loose the cedar fragrance totally?

Not a dumb question Kathy. But yes it does hide the cedar aroma.
However, I am refinishing a cedar chest, my mother built when she was in highschool. yes, girls took wood shop back then(the Good old Days). I notice once I got the shellac off and was sanding natural wood, the cedar smell came out. Also, She had had stuff stored for years and years and the smell inside was terrible but once again, I started sanding down and the cedar aroma came back.

Now back to the cedar egg ornaments. The paint is a coating and will mask the cedar aroma and if you put a coat of finish on it, Deft, BLO, whatever, it will mask the aroma.

Hmmm, So that leaves, leaving it natural and all you have to do, is sand the outside a little to regain the cedar aroma.

Ok, Now Gal, only dumb question is one you don't ask. How do I know, Many question in my head(Believe it HI HO) and I don't ask them. Now that is dumb!Talking

Tally Ho, Hi Ho!

Kenny, thanks for answering my question so diplimately. LOL
Hey my mother-in-law made a cedar chest when she was in high school also. We have it at the foot of our bed. It still has a faint cedar fragrance when the lid is lifted. I store extra winter bedding inside. I thought that was so cool she made the chest at a time when girls just didn't go in for woodshop. We actually have hubby's Dad's cedar chest too! Well, not quite true our daughter has it.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Kathy

Cute little Santas Terry, curious to know what the grain looks like on the unpainted egg? They might make great chip carvings, if the grain and the wood is colorful.

I'll have to take some photos of the eggs unpainted. I have 66 of them yet to carve on.
